You don’t have to run out and buy expensive Christmas ornaments every year, even if your old ones are a bit worn. There are many ways that you can make those boring ornaments look fabulous – you just need a bit of time and imagination.

From bows and glitter to creating a custom scene inside ornaments for your tree, there are so many ways to make ordinary ornaments really stand out, and many of them take very little time and money. Kids love DIY projects at Christmas time, so be sure to include them in the ornament-making. We have found a great collection of do-it-yourself ornaments that you can make from your old bulbs; you just have to add a few embellishments.
Whether you are looking to completely customize your tree this year or you simply need to know how to repair those old ornaments so they will look new again, we have the DIY collection for you to dress up those boring old ornaments and really decorate your tree in style

1. Add Ribbon

Just a hot glue gun and some ribbon will give those ornaments a great new look. Add stripes in contrasting colors or choose a theme and go with it. You just have to cut the ribbon to the lengths needed, and you can mix and match ribbon width, colors, and even ribbon type to really customize the look. Glue the ribbon to the bulb and then tie it up at the top in a nice bow.
2. Add Fabric

If you have strips of Christmas fabric – or just any old fabric- you can cut and glue them onto your old ornaments and cover up any imperfections. Create a theme with your fabric, and you can make the ornaments look as if they were quilted together. This requires a bit of work with regard to measuring and cutting the fabric, but you can do it with absolutely no sewing involved.
3. Add Paint

If your ornaments are beginning to fade or you simply don’t like the color anymore, you can just paint them. Glass ornaments hold new paint very well. Just choose the color that you want and then paint it however you prefer. You can add ribbons, fabric, or anything else to the top to embellish them and even get a bit creative and paint different colors on the same ornament.
4. Add Sparkle

Glitter is a great way to dress up those boring ornaments and to make old ornaments look new again. Just use spray adhesive to keep the glitter in place. If you are planning to change the color of the ornaments, paint them and then add glitter while the paint is still wet, so that it will stick. Acrylic paints work best on most ornament materials, and you can find glitter in every color of the rainbow.
5. Fill Them

Clear glass ornaments are a wonderful way to add a personal and unique flair to your holiday décor. Instead of the typical fake snow or pine sprigs, why not fill them with cherished memories? You can place small photos inside the clear ornaments for a completely personalized look that will make your tree even more special.
6. Bulb Filled Ornaments

If you have clear plastic or glass ornaments, you can fill the inside with mini Christmas lights that are glittery and really add a sparkle. Just add faux snow, mini bulb ornaments, and a glittery bow. These are great for the tree and for decorating wreaths or anything else you can imagine. Add a few to the table for a beautiful centerpiece.
7. Vintage Makeover

Transform your holiday décor with a charming, vintage-inspired twist by giving your ornaments a stylish makeover! Whether you're aiming for a nostalgic, old-world vibe or just want to add a subtle touch of timeless elegance, this DIY project will bring a vintage flair to your tree.
8. Make a Snowman

Just a bit of felt on those old ornaments will allow you to create any character you want. Consider turning them into snowmen or even Santa Claus. Just cut the felt that you need and use your glue gun to hold it all in place. These are easy to do, and the kids will love them. Incidentally, they make wonderful personalized gifts as well.
9. Glitter Pen Ornaments

If you have glitter pens, you can use them to create stunning new ornaments in place of old, boring ones. Just add the design that you want, and in any color that you want. If you are planning to paint, do that first and allow plenty of time for the paint to dry before you begin using the glitter pens. Then just add names, swirls, messages, or anything you want to really make those ornaments special.
10. Decoupage Them

If you really love to DIY your ornaments, decoupage is a great choice. You just have to make or buy the Mod Podge and then cut the strips of paper or whatever you are planning to use. This is a great way to cover over cracks and holes in plastic ornaments and gives your tree such a wonderful, homemade look. You can do whatever color or design you want, so your tree will be completely customized.
