Christmas Snowman Decor
To me, a snowman is a must-have character in decorations for Christmas. It goes along with my childhood annual viewing of the classic stop motion Santa Claus is Coming to Town movie.
So, I have decided this year will be the year of the snowman in my decorations. I have made a flower pot snowman before, but this is a new spin on that idea that I really love.
Whenever the local nursery or hardware store has their end of season sales, I always pick up a few extra flower pots, and that means I always have them on hand for crafting.
This little clay pot is a perfect base for gluing on a simple styrofoam head to create a perfect snowman decor idea!
Don't miss my popsicle stick snowman craft or my snowman photo ornament that I recently made. You'll also love this cute little 3D Santa and snowman ornament idea for your tree. Snowmen are so much fun to make!
What Paint Should I Use on The Flower Pot?
Since this is going to be a craft you keep indoors, you can really use any paint you wish. I used basic acrylic craft paint for mine, but you could even use spray paint if you prefer.
Just coat the flower pot well with white paint and let it dry completely before creating your snowman.
Use extra paint to make this simple snowman birdhouse craft for kids. What a great way to add decorations outside that are also functional! You can also use extra paint to make these easy snowman ornaments using a simple painted piece of wood.
Can I Make These in Bigger Sizes?
Yes! I love making things like this in big and small, so they look like a family of snowmen. My reindeer clay pot decorations are also in various sizes. They look so cute lined up on the mantle and are definitely easy to make.
Just pick up larger styrofoam balls and clay pots and make them just like you did this one! Once you make a family of snowmen, add them to your mantle with these homemade snowman decorations hanging between them. What a fun way to add to your holiday decor this year!
Can I Use a Ready-Made Mini Tophat Instead?
Of course, you can use ready-made supplies for this craft if you prefer. I have seen small tophats in craft stores and even at Dollar Tree in the past. The only thing will be to make sure they are the right size.
If you find some that will fit your styrofoam ball, then grab those and just customize them with ribbon and berries as I show. This snowman ornament craft uses a ready-made tophat and is super cute!
Don't forget to add these easy snowman porch decorations to your home this season, too!

How to Make a Christmas Snowman Decor from a Clay Pot
Begin by painting the flower pot white on all sides (inside, not necessary). Set this aside and allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Now, you will trace and cut out the black paper needed for your hat. First, the long strip to wrap into a circle for the hat's middle.
Next, you will cut out the brim of the hat.
Then, you will cut out the top of the hat.
Attach these together with staples and glue.
Begin gluing the glitter yarn or ribbon around the brim of the hat and very top of the hat as shown.
Glue this in place onto your styrofoam ball.
Then add eyes and a mouth with a black marker.
Glue on a strip of orange felt for the "carrot" nose.
Now, you will glue the styrofoam head to the bottom of the flower pot with the opening faced down onto the table as shown.
Attach a strip of ribbon for a scarf.
Then, glue on the additional berries or buttons to create the "suit."
Next, you will attach a few leaves and berries from your holiday pick to the hat.
Let everything dry before displaying.
