November 19, 2019 By Katie Hale 1 Comment

My adorable little craft stick lollipop photo ornament is the perfect way to hold onto those memories year after year. A simple craft stick, ribbon, some glitter paper, and your favorite snapshot make a great customizable ornament that showcases your loved ones. I love this craft to gift to family or simply to add to a keepsake box for my kids.

I just made this adorable snowman craft stick photo ornament, and loved it, but wanted something that reminded me of the candy always on hand during the holidays. This was a great solution!

Craft Stick Lollipop Ornament

When making an ornament, I like to use what I have on hand if possible. I always keep craft sticks, ribbon, and glitter paper in stock, so this came about in just a few minutes at no real expense. Use a snapshot of your family, kids, or even your pets. Just make sure you add a date and name on the back so you will always know when it was made.

If you are looking for more homemade ornaments for the tree this year, make sure you make this cute snowman and Santa candle ornaments. So cute and easy to make! Another option I love is these rustic snowflake ornaments out of an old book. So beautiful!

The kids can help by making these simple but pretty pasta snowflake ornaments. or they can use this color your own ornament printable.

Can I Use Different Colors of Craft Paper and Ribbon?

Yes! These happened to be the colors I had on hand and they fit easily with our tree theme this year. You could use traditional red and green, white and silver, or blue and silver colors that are often found in holiday decor. You could even make them match these paper straw mini Christmas tree ornaments to create a theme on your tree!

While I tend to prefer a more rustic style and look to my Christmas tree, there is much to be said about creating a theme on your tree. For instance, these adorable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ornaments are ideal for a kid’s tree that is multi-colored and all about their favorite character.

Customizing ornaments is one of the reasons I love making them myself! I’ve used these snowman mason lid ornaments for a snowman themed tree that was gorgeous!

How Do I Preserve the Photo On My Lollipop Ornament?

One of the bigger concerns when making a photo ornament is making sure the image will last for several years or longer. This particular craft is very difficult to seal properly. I recommend simply printing extra pictures that you won’t be upset about losing down the road.

Another tip is to use something like mod podge as a sealant. This will prevent fading and protect from water. Just make sure you read the labels well to make sure you are using a product that is non-toxic and safe.

If you like keeping photos as part of your decor, then you might also like this photo wreath from lids. I love that you can add any color ribbon or burlap to this wreath and use it for the holidays! It could also make a wonderful holiday gift just like our LED photo luminaries have for me in the past.

Supplies needed to make a lollipop photo ornament

How to Make a Craft Stick Lollipop Photo Ornament

For this photo ornament, you will start by using something round like a spool of ribbon, cookie-cutter, or lid to trace a circle onto your glitter foam paper as well as your picture. You want the foam paper circle to be larger than your picture. Once that has been traced, you will cut out both of the circles and set them aside.

Note: Use these pieces as templates if you are going to make more than one ornament.

Tracing the circle for the top of the photo ornament

Next, you will attach the picture onto the center of the glitter paper with craft glue.

Set that aside to dry, and begin wrapping the bottom of the craft stick with ribbon.

Adding the ribbon to the craft stick with hot glue for a lollipop photo ornament

I glue this in place to begin, then add a dot of glue as needed while working my way up the craft stick. I left the bottom empty and added ribbon to around 1″ of the craft stick. Secure the ribbon on the back with hot glue or craft glue.

Next, you will secure the foam piece to the craft stick with glue so that the picture is on the front of the stick and the ends of the ribbon are on the back of the craft stick.

Adding a bow to the lollipop ornament

A final step for this craft is to add an additional satin ribbon bow with a bead or pearl just below the bottom of the round glitter foam to look more like a traditional lollipop.

  • Hot glue gun and glue

Instructions

  1. Begin by tracing and cutting a circle of glitter foam paper and cutting your photograph into a circle shape.
  2. For this, I used a spool of ribbon to trace the shape, but you can use a cookie cutter or a lid if you prefer. Just make sure your glitter paper is about 1/2" larger than your picture. Tracing the circle for the top of the photo ornament
  3. Attach the photo to the glitter paper with hot glue or craft glue and set aside. Gluing the image onto the glitter paper for the photo ornament
  4. Set this aside, and begin wrapping the bottom of the craft stick with ribbon. I started gluing the ribbon in place about 1/2" from the bottom of the craft stick. Gluing the glitter paper and picture onto the lollipop photo ornament
  5. Glue this in place with craft glue or hot glue with a few drops on each side to secure the ribbon. I added ribbon to around 1" of the craft stick before cutting the end of the ribbon and securing on the backside with glue.
  6. Next, you will glue the foam piece onto the craft stick with the ends of the ribbon on the backside of the stick. Adding a bow to the lollipop ornament
  7. You can now add an additional satin ribbon bow with a bead or pearl just below the bottom of the round glitter foam top to look more like a traditional lollipop.
  8. The final addition to this ornament is a simple thread or twine piece cut and looped then glued onto the back of the foam piece for hanging on the tree. Lollipop photo ornament hanging on a holiday tree
