These wood slice reindeer ornaments are a cute and easy way to decorate your tree this year. They are a great rustic ornament idea that is super easy to make and looks great on your tree.

If your family loves watching the holiday movies, this little Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer is a great addition to your holiday tree.

While you make this craft, set up the kids to make these easy pinecone reindeer. So many fun ideas for the holidays, and Rudolf themed crafts are definitely some of my favorites.

They might also have fun helping you paint these fun clay pot reindeer to fill with their favorite treats.

Wood Slice Reindeer Ornaments

I adore the look of wooden slice ornaments. They are so rustic and unique, plus you know that no two look identical. I love knowing my ornaments are one of a kind.

These simple reindeer ornaments only take a few minutes to assemble, and can easily be customized to match the rest of your holiday decor. You could even turn this idea for hand-lettered ornaments into special ones for Christmas.

If you like this rustic look, then you need to check out this list ofwooden signs for Christmas decorating. Of course, I love wooden rustic ideas for year-round like this wooden frame glass jar vase holder that is ideal for adding flowers to decorate your home.

Add some holiday-colored ribbon, and it is ideal for the holidays.

Where Can I Find Wood Slices for Crafts?

If you don’t have access to small trees you can slice yourself, check local craft stores. I have had great luck finding these wood slices around the holidays at both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s.

You can even ask in neighborhood swap shop groups for scrap lumber or wood to create your own. User your imagination to find pieces that will work for this craft.

There are tons of reclaimed wood Christmas decorations you can add to your home. You can even find uses for these to add wood signs to decorate your home with a country-chic rustic style.

For those busy moms who need a little break from time to time, extra lumber pieces can be used to make this wooden wine glass holder for the bath! Wouldn’t that make a great holiday present?

Can I Glue the Hanger Instead of Drilling a Hole For It?

I prefer to cut a hole in the wooden slice to string a ribbon or yarn through for hanging, as the wooden slice is heavy and glue or tape would typically just fall off. If you prefer, you can test these with a bit of ribbon glued to the back, and then cover the ribbon with a bit of cardstock and glue it into place for extra security.

You can also screw a small hook into the top of them if they are thick enough. I did this with my simple penguin cork ornaments and know it works well for holding them up on a tree.

I’ve made several heavier ornaments in the past that held up well with just a simple string, so no need to fear they will fall off or break. This snowman ornament and the simple mason jar ornaments with old broaches are examples of heavier pieces that held up well.

Supplies Needed

  • Wood slice
  • Small twigs or branches
  • Satin ribbon in holiday color
  • Red pom pom
  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • Drill (if drilling a hole in wood)

How to Make Wood Slice Reindeer Ornaments

If you are going to add a hole to the wood slice, you will begin by using your drill to make a small hole near the edge of the slice. String a ribbon or yarn through the hole and tie for hanging later.

Once the hole has been cut, you will use the marker to draw on eyes and a mouth for your reindeer.

Next, hot glue the red pom pom to the center of the wood slice to create Rudolf’s “red nose”.

Next, take some of the twigs and break them to a small piece and glue to the back or top of the slice near the hole you made earlier.

Once the glue has dried, you will hang as desired on your holiday tree.
