Why I Love This Popsicle Stick Shelf

What’s not to love? This is an easy DIY project and it’s really cheap. You can make this entire shelf for under $5 – that a lot less than paying $50 at Pottery Barn. Amazon has these wide popsicle sticks in packs of 200 for less than $5.

If you are looking for some truly unique and gorgeous décor for any room, this DIY popsicle stick shelf is perfect. This is a simple project that is so much fun to make – even the kids could help with this one!

Step By Step Photo Tutorial:

Prep Time: 5 Minutes

Active Time: 30 Minutes

Total Time: 35 Minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Materials:

  • Popsicle Sticks – The number depends on how thick you want your shelf
  • Hot Glue Gun

Supplies needed for DIY popsicle stick shelf

Instructions:

1. I’ve seen a lot of tutorials that mention a template for these shelves, but you really don’t need one. You just start out with six popsicle sticks.

2. Begin by forming your sticks into a hexagon shape. Note that your sticks will overlap each other – this is how it should be. This is also where you’ll add the glue.

3. Lay one stick down and place two sticks running up at an outward angle from that bottom stick. Glue sticks into place.

4. Place two more sticks in the opposite direction of the first two, running diagonally and glue in place.

5. Take a final stick and glue on top to the last two sticks that you attached. Now you have the shape of your hexagon.

6. Repeat this same procedure, gluing the sticks down as you go. Start from the bottom, then add the two diagonal sticks, etc.

Layering sticks to create the shelf

7. Do this until your shelf is as thick as you want it to be. Note that there will be a gap between your sticks – this is also as it should be.

8. If you are going to stain or paint your shelf, do it once you have all of the sticks in place and the glue has had time to dry. I recommend leaving it for at least an hour before you try to paint or stain it.

9. At this point, you can attach a hanger to the back of the shelf for easier hanging or you could simply hang a corner of your hexagon over a nail or screw on the wall.
