There really aren’t many things that gross me out more than a stained, dirty toilet. Of course, I have a strict cleaning routine around the house—especially the bathroom—but unfortunately, mineral stains can’t just be scrubbed away with some soap. The minerals found in hard water (calcium, magnesium, iron) attach themselves to surfaces really quickly, so you may notice these stains even though you clean regularly. It’s not you, it’s the water!

Luckily, I’ve found the best way to clean these up, but be prepared, as this is a lengthy process that requires some elbow grease.

Video Instructions

Here’s What You Do

  • Use a plunger to remove as much water from the bowl as possible
  • Pour vinegar so it covers the stains on the bottom  (you’d be surprised at just how versatile vinegar really is!)
  • Soak toilet paper in vinegar and stick it to the stains around the bottom bowl
  • Leave to sit overnight, while scrubbing the bottom every now and then
  • Remove the toilet paper and scrub
  • Flush toilet and enjoy the cleanliness!

If for whatever reason this doesn’t work quite as well for you, try any of these four other homemade toilet bowl cleaner remedies – we like it easy and frugal!

Take Note: Some people may suggest muriatic acid because it works very, very quickly, but this is a big no-no if you aren’t a professional. It is an extremely dangerous and powerful chemical that should be steered clear of.

Hexane free castor oil will regrow hair. About 25 years ago, I accidentally removed the hair from my right temple with a rotary tool. Over the years, my right temple tried to catch up as I developed my Dad's hairline. Hexane free castor oil purchased at Whole Foods has regrown the hair on both sides and thickened it throughout. Apply it undiluted to the bare spots. Mix it with organic coconut oil to thin it down and massage into your scalp all over. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 2 or 3 hours then wash it out. Do it 2 times a week at first. It works!

We have really hard water where I live and after 3-4 days discolored water starts building. But I'm lazy - I just throw a denture cleaning tablet into the toilet bowl water, leaving it work its magic overnight. And voilà - bright, white, shiny toilet. ?

Do you have anything that will get rid of the brown stain on artificial types of marble. We don’t have a pump we have city water. I’ve tried everything. Nothing gets rid of it eggs

Really great way to remove the mineral stains from the toilet. I am a green maniac and I'm trying to use only natural and homemade products for cleaning! I do it successfully in the kitchen but I still use commercial products for cleaning the toilet and bathroom. The only "natural" tip that I use for these parts of my house is garbage disposal tab(made of citrus peels) for the trash bin. It really helps to remove the bad odor. Thank you for your tip! Best wishes!

Definitely quite efficient and simple recipe. Using vinegar is a good option when out of any other cleaning solutions. A friend of mine is trying recently to clean more naturally and she'll be very glad to have your advises on mind. I'm recommending your post to her and to some friends too.
