This burlap heart Valentine's Day garland is such an easy project to add to your mantle! I love something simple like this to ring in a new holiday. This one can be added to your mantle, a doorway, or even on the front of a table or buffet. A few bits of scrap fabric, burlap, and twine are all that you need to create this great decoration for the day of love.
Burlap Heart Valentine's Day Garland
As the self-proclaimed queen of repurposing, I love figuring out ways to use scrap material. This idea was inspired by other garland and banner ideas I've seen on Pinterest in the past. I knew I could easily turn some of my scrap material into something beautiful for Valentine's Day. The result was this cute idea that uses just a few bits of burlap and fabric to create a banner that fits easily into my Valentine decorations.
If you have even more extra fabric, you'll love my huge list of projects to upcycle leftover fabric scraps. This Valentine no-sew fabric wreath is another great project that can use scraps of pink, red, and white fabric. If paper is more your style, you can make this easy paper heart garland instead! No matter which you choose, they will all look amazing hanging on your mantle this year.
Protip: Did you know you can buy boxes of scrap fabric? I use this Etsy seller to grab boxes when I am running low on scraps for projects. It's easier and cheaper than a fabric store!
Can I Use Fabric Glue Instead of Hot Glue?
I find that hot glue works best on this to keep the burlap banner pieces together. Craft glue works just so-so, but fabric glue is a great choice as it is designed to hold those fabric bits together. You can use whatever glue you prefer when making this Valentine's Day garland. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is using a basic school glue like Elmer's, or a simple tape.
While making this project, you can easily keep the kids occupied and having fun by making a batch of this recipe for Valentine's cinnamon roll hearts. They are so easy to make and seriously delicious!
Where Can I Buy Burlap Pieces?
Burlap is available at any craft store. I use it often enough that I find buying a large bulk roll of burlap is the best deal. This is just one of many burlap crafts that I've made, so keeping a roll in my craft closet is a must.
Some places I find bits of burlap are the Dollar Tree, Amazon, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Joann's Fabric, and even just at my local Walmart or Target store. Keep your eye out for different sized pieces and pick them up when on sale.
Add this great Valentine's Day lantern to the mantle alongside your burlap banner to complete the look! These Valentine's Day love lights are another great choice for adding a bit of light to your mantle that also gives a bit more romance to the decor.
How Do I Keep Burlap From Unraveling?
My go-to method to keep the burlap from fraying or unraveling is to use a bit of spray starch on the edges and iron it down. Others will use a bit of stitching to sew the edges. I've even seen some burlap not fray simply by cutting between the lines of the material. Use whatever method works best for you to keep your project from coming unraveled.
As you can see in this craft, I didn't even worry about it. I like the rustic look on some items, and when making a fast garland, the unraveling looks fine in my opinion.

Supplies Needed
- Burlap

- Twine
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue
How to Make a Valentine's Day Garland with Burlap
Begin by cutting rectangles of burlap from your roll of burlap. If you want all identical, make one template piece and then use it to cut the rest of your pieces for as many as needed to create the banner.
Once you have the rectangles cut, you will fold in half vertically and then trim off the bottom at an angle to create the "v" seen below.
Continue this process until all are done.
Next, you will trace a heart shape onto the scrap fabric, and cut out the same number of hearts as you have burlap pieces.
I cut some in the red gingham pattern and others in solid white.
Next, you will lay your burlap pieces onto the table, and then place your piece of twine across the top edge of them to create the template for your banner or garland.
Once you have the twine positioned as you like, you will then fold over the burlap and glue in place to create a seal.
Now, you will glue the hearts onto the center of each burlap piece.
If wanted, you can now use scrap fabric or ribbon to create small bows to go on the ends of the garland.
Attach to the ends of your banner twine.
Finally, you will hang as desired on a mantle, over a shelf, in a doorway, or on the front of a table.
