Learn How to Make a Scarecrow with Popsicle Sticks

I remember collecting all of my popsicle sticks as a kid to wash and use for crafts. At the time, I didn’t realize my mom could have bought a whole bag of fresh unused craft sticks in the store!

Regardless of how I came up with them as a kid, I have fond memories of gluing and taping them together to create fun projects. Glue and paint were always standards in our craft closet, and my precious stash of craft sticks often turned into houses, pumpkins, teepee’s, and of course, this scarecrow.

Bringing this craft back to life with a bit more finesse was a goal I am excited to achieve. I hope that this gives you and your children just as much joy as it always gave me!

What is the best paint to use on craft stick projects

There are tons of kid-safe acrylic paints in the craft stores to choose from. However, I have been known to use whatever paint we had on hand. My favorites are small bottles of craft paints, spray paint for larger projects, and sometimes enamel paints for an added gloss to a project.

If you are making these scarecrow crafts with your kids, then you definitely want to go with non-toxic craft paint. Most of these will be acrylic paints. Tempera craft paint is another great option for mixing up in small batches. This is typically used in schools as it is much less expensive but can be a great resource to keep on hand in your home craft cabinet.

Craft stick Scarecrow Ideas for Making Each Unique

Scarecrows are all so unique that it is a must to use your imagination for this project. While this is a very classic way to teach you how to make a scarecrow face on a craft, there are tons of options out there. Below are some fun ideas to make your scarecrow even more unique!

  • Give your scarecrow a different colored hat
  • Add fabric birds to the hat instead of a flower
  • Use twine or yarn for hair instead of hay pieces
  • Make the scarecrow nose round or square instead of a triangle
  • Give your scarecrow a frown or paint on an open mouth with big teeth
  • Use marker to create eyes or buy oversized googly eyes to give your scarecrow a goofy look
  • Attach a bow tie to the bottom of the craft to make it look like a fancy scarecrow

How to Make a Scarecrow With Popsicle Sticks

Gather all of your supplies together so everything is within reach on your workspace.

You will begin by arranging your craft sticks into a long square. For mine, I used 6 craft sticks lined up and a separate one across the top to make it look like there was a hat.

Gluing craft sticks together to create a scarecrow head

Arrange them to be even across both ends, and then begin gluing them together.

Once the head has been created, you will add the last craft stick to the top at an angle to create the hat

For added support, you can add another diagonal craft stick on the backside of the head across the middle

Your next step is to paint the hat. You will begin by painting the single diagonal craft stick across the top of the color you chose. Next, you will paint all exposed craft sticks above that.

Finishing hat and adding a face to the scarecrow project

Have fun creating a unique face by adding googly eyes, a paper nose, and a smile as you desire

Finally, you will glue on the hay, yarn, or twine to the sides and end of the hat to create hair. You can get creative here and cut it short, leave it long and shaggy, or even braid it into pigtails.
