Materials You’ll Need

  • Old tire (car or tractor tire works best)
  • Shovel or spade
  • Heavy-duty pond liner or thick plastic sheet
  • Sand or fine gravel (for leveling and protecting the liner)
  • Decorative rocks or stones
  • Water (optional: water plants or a small pump)

Video Tutorial

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Select and Prepare Your Location

Choose a flat area in your garden where the pond will be visible and accessible. Decide if you want the pond flush with the ground or slightly raised.

2. Dig a Hole for the Tire

Use a shovel to dig a shallow hole slightly wider than the tire’s outer diameter. This will help the tire sit stably.

3. Set the Tire

Place the tire into the hole and make sure it is level. Add or remove soil as needed to prevent rocking or tilting.

4. Line the Inside

Lay a heavy-duty pond liner or thick plastic sheet inside the tire. Smooth out wrinkles and make sure the liner extends over the edges.

5. Add Protection and Gravel

Place a layer of sand or fine gravel at the bottom of the tire to protect the liner. Arrange decorative rocks around the edges to hold the liner in place and enhance the look.

6. Fill With Water

Slowly fill the tire pond with water. You can leave it as a simple feature or add aquatic plants like water lilies for a natural touch.

7. Decorate Your Pond

Arrange stones, plants, or other garden décor around the pond to blend it with your landscape and soften the tire edges.

Tips for Success

  • Use bigger tires for larger water features.
  • If you plan to keep fish, consider using a proper pond liner for longevity.
  • Wear gloves when handling tires to avoid sharp edges.
  • Add a small solar pump or fountain for added charm.

With just a few materials and some creativity, you can transform old tires into a beautiful garden pond that’s both eco-friendly and eye-catching. Watch the video above and follow these steps to bring your backyard to life!

How fun, I love the end result. I've got a few used car tires that I've debated parting with, but I'll have to give this a shot. What a creative way to make use of older items, thank you for sharing. 422autosales.com

What's the point of the tires? Just dig three holes and then line them with the tarp. The tires serve absolutely no purpose other than just so you can say, "Look what I did with three old tires!" The tires are pointless.

Ted, the tire will keep the edges neatly round and in place. Great if you like a completely round pool for that natural look.

The water doesn't circulate? Won't it get stagnant?
