Creative Use for Old T-Shirts: Braid Them Into a Beautifully Bright Rug

Modified: Jun 10, 2015 by Elisabeth Kruger · This post may contain affiliate links · 1 Comment

Are you a hoarder who just can’t let go of anything? Don’t worry, you certainly aren't alone! Thankfully, I've found a project that will finally justify your hoarding tendencies. Gather all those t-shirts you've got collecting dust or moth balls and turn them into a homemade, colorful, repurposed rug! Sure, a rug made of old t-shirts may sound rather scraggly and unappealing, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the fabulous end result.

Creative Use for Old T-Shirts: Braid them into a Beautifully Bright Rug
Step by Step Instructions: http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-braided-t-shirt-rug/?ALLSTEPS

This isn't a quick hour project; be prepared to spend some good time making it. The part that will really take up your time is sewing the bottom to secure all the coiling braids; it’ll likely be too thick for you to use a sewing machine so you’ll have to go old school – by hand. Also make sure to use a heavy thread to ensure longevity.

Top Tips:

If you want your rug to be reversible without just one pretty top side and another ugly stitched bottom side, try this: when sewing, use a blunt needle and take your thread underneath one of the strips from the braid, then across to one of the strips from the coil. Alternating back and forth on the inside of the coil should hide the stitching.

If hoarding t-shirts isn’t your thing but you have a closet full of old jeans then just use them instead. When cutting the strips in the first step, just cut them a little thinner than you would the t-shirts.

Still don't have any idea how to gather them together. Could you make it "How-To" post with the detail process by process?

    Thanks
